Barbie actually made her debut in a bathing suit! Available in two versions (blonde and brunette), she was dressed in a black and white striped strapless swimsuit. While her face closely resembles what Madonna's looks like now, we dig the red lipstick and retro look of her bathing suit.
Sunset Malibu Barbie (1971)
The first Malibu Barbie featured a pretty demure, aqua colored one-piece, tinted pink shades, and matching aqua eyeshadow. With her straw blonde hair, she was created to represent the "California Girl" look. We're hoping that Barbie wore sunblock, but from the look of these deep tan lines she has here, we think she may have forgot the SPF. Tacky tan lines aside, she's wearing a more modern turquoise bikini with bottoms that look akin to boy shorts.
Malibu Barbie, The Beach Party (1980)
Fast forward a couple of years and Barbie is back in a one piece. This time around, the cut at the bottom is much higher to showcase more leg. Ah, the '80s! Also: Barbie's got some serious side-boob action going on.
Tropical Barbie, 1991
By the time the '90s rolled around, Barbie featured tons of friends of various ethnicities, like Shani, pictured here. For the summer, they all wore matching holographic one-piece bathing suits in complementary jewel tones. The high cut is still there, along with a new stomach cutout.
50th Anniversary Bathing Suit Barbie, 2009
Paying homage to her 1959 self, Barbie's previous striped one-piece is now cut in half and features additional pink bows. The low-waisted ruffly bikini bottoms? Not. That. Innocent. Barbie In A Mermaid Tale (2010)
Behold, the boy short bikini! It's probably the most covered up two-piece Barbie has ever rocked. This particular style is the bathing suit she wore in her film, "A Mermaid Tale," in which she plays a surfer that later finds out she's half-mermaid. Of course she did. Whatever the case, at least the top half of her thighs are covered.
Hawaii Barbie (2012)
Wait, is Barbie in a maxi skirt?! For part of the special Dolls Of The World collection, Barbie has brunette locks (a nice change!) and your typical colorful bikini. But now she's sporting a major grass hula skirt that covers up pretty much everything except her midriff.
Barbie Beach Doll (2013)
Now, she's back to her skin flashing ways. With her super long, down-to-her-derriere blonde hair, this Barbie features a sporty halter top style bikini (which covers up a bit more skin on top) and a low-waisted bottom

Barbie's latest getup consists of a tiny, strapless, high-waisted floral bikini and a white fishnet coverup. Although the look is on-trend, it's far more revealing than her one-pieces of the past.
