Koleksi Barbie dari Seluruh Dunia

Mattel kembali memproduksi seri boneka Barbie dari seluruh dunia, lengkap dengan busana khas mereka.

Mexico Barbie, 2012

Mexico Barbie, 2012

The 2012 Mexico Barbie wears what Barbie Collection Designer Linda Kyaw calls an "incredible Barbie pink gown," a single purple ribbon in her wavy brown hair, and accessorizes with a Chihuahua. But if Mattel was looking for authenticity, "She should have braids woven through with ribbons," Adriana Velez, who describes herself as Mexican-American, writes at Cafe Mom. "She could have a white blouse with colorful embroidery and a woven shawl. Hell, they could have just called up a photo of the most iconic Mexican ever, Frida Kahlo, and copied the look. Instead they gave her some vague pink thing with ruffles."

China Barbie

The 2012 dolls carry tiny pets instead of other, more culturally significant accessories. The China Barbie Doll looks like a Hollywood take on an ancient culture, especially with the baby panda tucked under her arm. Mattel describes her outfit as "Asian-inspired" and adds that her hair "evokes drama."

Argentina Barbie

While the dolls do evoke the countries they represent, the costumes (and descriptions) veer dangerously toward the cliche. The 2012 Argentina Barbie, Mattel says, is "ready to tango" and and has a rose in her hair and on her ankle "for a touch of passion." She carries a "baby cougar." It's more fantastical than educational.

India Barbie and Hawaii Barbi

But critics say that much of the "traditional" clothing is more cliched than culturally accurate. The 2012 India Barbie (left) wears a saffron-colored sari and has a monkey clinging to one arm. Hawaiian Barbie wears a grass skirt and has a tiny sea turtle but no Hawaiian facial features (or shoes, even though she has classic Barbie feet).

France Barbie

France Barbie

The newest France Barbie doll has nothing in common with the 1980 version other than blonde hair. "The dolls before her, however, were inspired by the culture and landmarks of the cities," Mattel explains. "This 2013 France Barbie Doll is the first to evoke the simple beauty of the French countryside, of quiet villages and quaint cafes, and landscapes that have inspired world-famous artists and given birth to some of the world's greatest works of art." That's a basket of bread on her arm.

Australia Barbie, 2012 and 1993

"The Barbie Collector Dolls of the World line was launched in 1980 and is the largest and longest-running series in the history of the Barbie brand," a Mattel spokesperson told Yahoo! Shine. "Each doll wears an ensemble inspired by the traditional costume and fashion of the country." Though some have bristled at the fact that the foreign-looking dolls carry a passport and a pet, Mattel says that "Every doll in the current line includes a 'passport' and stamps as well as an animal friend providing additional play value." The 2012 Australian Barbie (left) looks prepared for the mall, not the outback (in spite of the koala on her arm); the 1993 version was much more rustic.

Holland Barbie

While their costumes may be inspired by their "homelands," they aren't exactly accurate. Ina 2012 video, Barbie Collector Designer Linda Kyaw calls this Holland Barbie doll's outfit "a glamorous interpretation" of what the Dutch used to wear, though her clogs are actually made of wood, not plastic.

Philippines Barbie

Philippines Barbie

The 2012 Philippines Barbie is the first doll ever to represent the Pacific nation. She's wearing what Mattel calls "a modern take" on the country's traditional "Maria Clara" gown, which takes its name from a famous Filipino novel.

Spain Barbie

Mattel has been dressing it's Spain Barbies in flamenco gowns since 1983, though this 2012 version has lost her mantilla and fan.

Chile Barbie

"It would be nice to see some contemporary images from these countries," Felix Sanchez, chairman and co-founder of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, told Fox News Latino. "These images seem very dated and seem to have been created for a different time." The 2013 Chile Barbie was wears clothing inspired by Cheilean horsemen called huaso, though her skirt is now significantly shorter than it was back in 1998.
